Cation Resin

Resin is the ion exchange media commonly used in water softening applications. An ion-exchange resin or ion-exchange polymer is a resin or polymer that acts as a medium for ion exchange. It is made up of a highly porous, polymeric material that is acid, base and water insoluble. The tiny goldish microbeads that make up these resins are derived from hydrocarbon and are about ½ millimeter in diameter.

Cation resin removes positively charged ions and the other will remove negatively charged ions. … As city water enters the tank filled with cation resin, all positively charged cations/calcium ions are attracted to the cation resin bead and will release hydrogen.
